Roshan's Blog: Baby's safety comes first

3/30/10

When I was a new parent I worried about many things…my whole being became one of “protector.” This new identity was so strong it consumed me and of course, once in a while I had feelings of guilt and remorse when I felt as though I had failed.

CPR & Child Safety classes are always a great idea to enroll in to help build confidence and knowledge in parents of newborns and young children. There are also many books available but even so, the unexpected can happen.

Babies and children will often surprise us when we least expect it. When my daughter was only seven months old, her “first roll over” sent her off the sofa and broke her leg. She was only out of eye sight for a moment! We ended up in the emergency room where she had a cast put on.  Watching her with that cast, we felt so terrible - we should’ve known better. But she learned to crawl with the cast on and in the end she had no long term effects. About a year later we found her at the top of an unattended ladder in our living room! She was two years old and I had run out to get something or answer the phone and up she went. She was fearless and we were fortunate that she didn’t fall.

A few years later, we almost had a tragic drowning experience with one of our sons. We were with friends and family in the community pool. All the kids had water wings on their arms and I suppose those gave us a sense of security. But even with those precautions, all parents need to stay extremely vigilant. Fortunately in this situation, in the nick of time we noticed him in trouble and pulled him out of the water.

While teaching my baby care classes, I could not stress enough about the importance of child safety and reviewing the information every few months to match the child’s development. There is nothing more important than a child’s safety, regardless who is calling on the phone, at the front door, or needing to run and fetch something nearby in a room or store. All it takes is a second for the consequences to change a baby’s life and family to one of tragedy.

Now that I am a grandmother, my protective instincts have kicked in again and the memories come flooding back to remind me of the “unprotected” fleeting moments. I count my blessings each day that all is well and that our kids grew up in one piece.
