Roshan's Blog: Should You Wake a Sleeping Baby
06/15/10
A sleeping baby is always such a blessing especially in those early days. One of the key factors to get a baby to sleep contently through the night (and hopefully skip those midnight feedings) is to keep them adequately fed during the day. Unfortunately, this may mean waking them up every few hours. It's tempting to let a newborn sleep for long hours during the day so that us moms get some peace and quiet but sometimes the payback is sleepless nights for everyone as your newborn catches up on feedings they have missed during the day.
Setting up feeding routines during the day also sets up a pattern helping the baby recognize the difference between day and night - awake time and sleep time. If a baby is healthy, gaining weight and starts to skip night feedings in the early weeks, it tells you that the baby is satisfied. Her tummy is full enough and will hopefully wake up less, allowing Mom and Dad to catch up on a few extra hours of sleep.
