Roshan's Blog: MOM Goes to Tanzania, Africa

08/17/10

This past July, I had an opportunity to return to Tanzania where I grew up. During my first week, I visited specific projects that I have been supporting through a nonprofit called Global Partners for Development.

Much of my life has involved helping families, particularly women and their children. One particular project that I am involved with is a women's group in Tanzania that teaches and assists women in poverty to start their own business. The project is very empowering for the women involved and gives them an opportunity to support their families simply by earning enough to put food on their plates each day.

I was very happy to meet a young woman named Esther who had lost her husband a few months ago and had no means of supporting her family. Global Partners stepped in and she is now running a used clothing business and doing well. I had also been in a similar retail business 10 years ago in the States and because I can speak Kiswahili (the native language), we were able to share stories and I provided encouragement and "tricks of the trade."

I left her with a large bag of baby clothes that I had brought from the US for her. She was delighted to tears and I'm sure the items sold quickly as word quickly spread through the village that she had good quality baby clothes for sale. She was also thrilled with a calculator I gave her...something every business woman needs!

I was happy to learn that this project now supports 46 women and has helped pull them out of poverty and has given them a way to provide for their families and their communities.

My trip was touching in many ways, so stay tuned...
