Roshan's Blog: I See You Are Warmly Wrapped Up, But What About Your Baby?
01/12/11I am crazed and need your advice.
Recently, I was at an outdoor mall in my hometown and saw two women all wrapped up in their cozy coats because it is January and it is cold outside. It was obvious that one of the women was meeting her friend to introduce her new baby who was in a cotton onesie with no hat, blanket, or coat to keep it warm. To my professional eye this baby was not even a month old.
I was going crazy as I sat in Pete’s unable to enjoy my coffee, trying to decide what would be the most appropriate approach to mention that I thought the baby needed to have a coat too as they were obviously feeling the cold and they had their coats on.
There were so many thoughts going through my head from where is their common sense to what a cute baby, I am sure it would love a warm coat, and so on. A baby’s circulation is close to the surface and they feel warm but this means they also lose heat very quickly.
So here's my dilemma: What’s a pediatric nurse to do when she encounters this wrongdoing? I just want to cuddle these babies to keep them warm and inform their parents that their babies are probably cold. As a health professional and mother of three, is it appropriate to say something? If so, what?
