Roshan's Blog: Rice Cereal - Baby's First Food

I expect more guilt has been added to a parent’s plate today as Dr. Alan Green reports that he believes rice cereal is causing the obesity epidemic. Rice cereal has been for decades recommended by doctors as the easiest food to digest when introducing solids to a baby for the first time.

My first reaction was: I don’t think rice cereal is the cause of the nation’s obesity epidemic, but rather high sugar foods such as sodas, fruit juices and prepared foods, coupled with a lack of daily exercise, is the problem.

Dr. Richard Bresser from Good Morning America also confirmed my thoughts and mentioned behavior plays into the epidemic. Introducing children to healthy foods when they are hungry can avoid obesity. A good point was made by both doctors that perhaps starting with whole grain or brown rice cereal would be more beneficial than the standard white rice cereal.

So don’t worry about adding an additional serving of guilt to your plate. You have from this moment on and the years ahead to ensure your child has a healthy diet.
