FAQ – WHAT IS GRIPE WATER USED FOR?
Gripe water is a time-tested formula that has been used for more than 100 years throughout Europe, Asia, Africa, India and the Caribbean to relieve the discomfort that infants face from colic, gas, teething and hiccups.
Forms of gripe water were previously imported to the United States, but those imports did not gain approval because the formulas contained alcohol. Mommy’s Bliss® introduced its all-natural, alcohol-free Mommy’s Bliss® Gripe Water to the American market in 1999. Mommy’s Bliss® Gripe Water is well known because of its effective formula. It has twice the amount of the effective ingredients (and our ingredients are organic!) as other gripe waters.
Our gentle liquid formula contains fennel, ginger and sodium bicarbonate, which are historically known to ease the nausea and discomfort caused by stomach gas and other colic symptoms. Mommy’s Bliss® Gripe Water is known by parents to be very effective for discomfort associated to colic…But, it provides effective relief move than just colic.
Did you know? Fennel and ginger are also effective for easing the discomforts of infant teething. Babies cry a lot when they are teething, and this may cause them to become gassy. Research also suggests that when babies are teething, the salivary glands produce an enzyme that upsets the stomach. This causes them to cry, too. FAQ – WHY DO MOMMYS BLISS® INGESTIBLE PRODUCTS (GRIPE WATER & KIDS UPSET TUMMY AND NAUSEA RELIEF) CONTAIN SODIUM BICARBONATE?
There are two main reasons why we include sodium bicarbonate in Mommy’s Bliss® Gripe Water and Kids Upset Tummy & Nausea Relief. First, the sodium bicarbonate acts to balance and maintain the pH of the formula. Second, the sodium bicarbonate acts in conjunction with the ginger and fennel to facilitate and aid digestion. Its antacid properties reduce gastric irritations and are well known by doctors and pharmacists. The sodium bicarbonate used in this product was specifically formulated for children, and the amount we use is minimal – just 14 mg, or less than one percent of the daily recommended amount for infants. All ingredients in the Mommy’s Bliss® Gripe Water and Kids Upset Tummy & Nausea Relief are listed on the FDA’s Generally Recognized as Safe (GRAS) list. Sodium bicarbonate is also included in the FDA Inactive Ingredients Guide.
FAQ – CAN YOU MIX FORMULA OR BREAST MILK WITH GRIPE WATER?
Although Mommy’s Bliss® Gripe Water can be administered in a baby bottle, we do not recommend that the herbal supplement be mixed with anything. Do not dilute the product with formula or breast milk. It is most effective when administered on its own.
Most of the time providing a baby Mommy’s Bliss® Gripe Water after a feeding or when signs of discomfort appear is the most effective. However, if your baby is consistently uncomfortable after feedings, providing the Mommy’s Bliss® Gripe Water prior to a feeding can help to eliminate the discomfort.
FAQ – WHEN TO GIVE GRIPE WATER?
Mommy’s Bliss® Gripe Water should be given as needed and not as a preventive measure– after all, it works quickly! To avoid early allergic reactions, we suggest that you wait until your baby is two weeks old and over seven pounds before administering Mommy’s Bliss® Gripe Water. For all other infants and toddlers give Mommy’s Bliss® Gripe Water at the first signs of discomfort.
Most babies will need the product after feedings, when they get gassy from eating too fast or from gulping in air while feeding. It is a good idea to wait 30 minutes after a feeding to administer Gripe Water, as this allows time for food to digest. When it is given too soon, the baby may vomit because he or she may be too full and the ingredients may not mix well with the stomach contents. If a baby is not able to complete a feeding due to gas, he or she may need Gripe Water prior to feeding. By administering the product at different times, you will learn what works best for your baby.
In addition to relieving infant discomfort, Mommy’s Bliss® Gripe Water is great for babies and toddlers who are teething. An enzyme released during teething, combined with swallowing excessive saliva, can cause stomach discomfort. When you can tell that your child is salivating excessively due to teething, try giving him/her a dose of Mommy’s Bliss® Gripe Water. You will see the effects within minutes and your child will thank you!
FAQ – How to give Gripe Water
Mommy’s Bliss® Gripe Water should be administered orally by using the Ezy Dose dropper included with the product or directly via an empty bottle after feedings. If using the dropper, avoid squirting and do not aim straight back toward the throat. This could cause gagging or choking on the formula. To prevent this possibility, insert the dropper into your child’s cheek and slowly dispense the medicine. This approach allows them to slowly swallow the formula for the best results.
If your child has not tasted Gripe Water previously, it may take some acclimation for them to get used to the flavor. If they initially reject the formula, try administering again when the baby is calm. This allows the infant to gradually get used to the taste of the formula.
Recommended dosages are as follows: Two weeks to one month of age: 1/2 tsp. (2.5 ml) Infants through one to six months of age: 1 tsp. (5 ml) Children six months and older: 2 tsp. (10 ml) Adults: 2 Tbsp. (30 ml) Adults can use Mommy’s Bliss® Gripe Water for gas, stomach upsets, nausea and hangovers, too!!

What is colic?
The term “colic” comes from the Greek word “kolikos,” which means “suffering in the colon.”Colic is often defined by the “rule of threes.” The episodes of inconsolable crying:
- Begin within the first three weeks of life
- Last at least three hours per day
- Occur at least three days per week
- Persist for at least three weeks
- Rarely last longer than three months.
What are the symptoms of colic?
According to Dr. Weil, the signs of colic in an otherwise healthy, well-fed baby include:
- Predictability of crying episodes. A baby who has colic cries in a predictable
fashion, usually in the late afternoon or evening. Attacks often start suddenly and without a clear reason. They only wind down after the infant passes gas, has a bowel movement or becomes physically exhausted.
- Inconsolability. Crying is often intense and difficult, if not impossible, to stop. It can last from a few minutes to several hours.
