Cracked Nipples

Cracked nipples may occur while you are breastfeeding. They can be very painful and are not considered a normal side effect of breastfeeding. Breastfeeding is generally considered a relaxing and bonding time between mother and baby and should not be painful.

If you are suffering from cracked nipples, there are a few possible reasons. First, poor latch on while breastfeeding is usually the main reason for cracked nipples. The way a baby latches on to the breast to get milk is very important in ensuring they are receiving enough milk supply and that mother’s breasts are not made sore or cracked. If you feel this may be the cause of your cracked nipples, consulting a lactation consultant to teach you proper latch on may help tremendously.

Another cause of cracked nipples is extreme skin dryness. This can be caused by such things as baby’s saliva, laundry detergent or extremely dry air. A nipple cream will greatly aid in helping to heal cracked nipples. Choosing one that is free from any harsh ingredients and irritants is important. Not only will a good nipple cream help treat cracked nipples, but it can also help prevent them in the first place and help to soothe any breast and nipple soreness.
