What Is Colic? Common Colic Remedies For Your Baby

What is colic? Colic generally occurs in newborn babies and is characterized by nonstop screaming and crying, red face, clenched fists, and the appearance of being in extreme pain.  It is generally theorized that it is caused because the baby's digestive tract is not fully developed yet.  Colic in a baby does not generally continue beyond the point of three months old.  Theorists believe this is because their  digestion has finally become mature enough.

A baby experiencing colic can generally disrupt the entire family's comfort, habits, and routine.  It can be very frustrating for a new mother and family because of the constant inability to stop the crying and results in a lot of sleepless nights.  You need to remain calm and know that this is merely a difficult stage for the baby, but eventually it will pass.  I hope that answers your question, “what is colic?”  For the purposes of this article, let‘s examine “how do I cure colic?”

There are many effective ways to relieve your baby of colic.  One is walking around with the baby or standing still and rocking side to side or bouncing.  Use Babys Bliss Gripe Water, a popular colic gripe water that helps rid the milk of any air or air bubbles before even getting to the baby's mouth.  Bottles with disposable liners or curved bottles may also be used because they rid the bottle of air bubbles.  Talk to your baby's pediatrician about changing formulas to a low allergy formula or to one that is designed for sensitive tummies or lactose intolerant babies.     Do not overfeed your baby, this can worsen the colic.  Wrap your baby up tightly in a soft blanket.  Make sure you  burp them frequently to help expel trapped air.  Avoid bright lights and loud noises.

Keep the environment as comfortable as possible for them.  Keep the lights slightly dimmed or replace the bulbs to a lower wattage.    Limit the number of visitors and keep them away from crowded places.  Avoid loud music and noises , although rhythmic noises may help to sooth them.  Put a warm  washcloth on the babies tummy. Gently massage the tummy in gentle circular motions.  Take the baby for a walk in the stroller.  Put them in their car seat and drive around the block a few times.  Put them in their swing.

Use colic gripe water, it soothes the digestive tract.  Give them a few drops through a dropper or mix some in with their milk.  This substance has been proven effective for decades.  If you are breastfeeding the baby try eliminating spicy, fatty, gas causing, onions, caffeine, cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, alcohol, and nicotine from your diet because everything that you eat is being transferred to your newborn.  Talk to your physician about eliminating or adding supplements or vitamins to your diet.  Keep a journal record to monitor your baby's schedule and what seems to be affecting him negatively.   I hope that answers your question, “what is colic?”  and gives you some good tips on how to  cure colic as well.
